Bisharp (Japanese: キリキザン Kirikizan) is a dual-type Dark/Steel Pokémon.

It evolves from Pawniard starting at level 52.

Biology

Physiology

Bisharp has a round red and black head resembling a helmet, topped with a gold, double-headed axe blade. Its face is shrouded by its "helmet" and is black and yellow. Its eyes are triangular with white irises and black pupils. Its eyes have a dark outline which gives the appearance of eyeliner. Its red, gold tipped shoulders resemble shoulder pads and its connecting torso and arms are colored black. Its hands are glove-like and metallic in appearance and have retractable blade-like appendages attached to them. On its torso are two bladed discs which resemble a ribcage. Down its body are two dark lines that run down and around to the back, which gives the appearance of armor. Its thighs are circular and red-colored and progressively get thinner as they connect to the feet. Both feet are metallic and blade-like, the split down the middle somewhat resembles ungulate hooves and is also very similar to steel war boots, or possibly leggings.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Behavior

Bisharp act as the leader of their packs and gives orders to Pawniard. While powerful and influential over its group, Bisharp are also territorial and belligerent. They will fight to be the alpha of the pack; Bisharp who fail in becoming leader are shamefully cast out. When a pack meets a prey, Bisharp performs the finishing attack.

Habitat

Bisharp live in packs and rule over their pre-evolutions.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Bisharp and its pre-evolution.
    • The types it has are also the two types that were introduced in Generation II.
    • This makes Bisharp and its pre-evolution the only Pokémon to have a double resistance to Ghost.
  • Pawniard and Bisharp are the only Pokémon that can have Defiant as a non-Hidden Ability.

Origin

It looks and acts similar to a traditional Japanese bandit, and specifically that of the leader, bearing more formal samurai-esque armor and features. It also bears a strong resemblance to Pulseman from Game Freak's earlier game of the same name. It may also have gained origin from the Kaijin style of Japanese monster movies, involving a humanoid creature that acts as a villain. There is also a resemblance to the Super Sentai and Kamen Rider Series' suited heroes.

Name origin

Bisharp is a combination of bishop (a piece in chess) and sharp (describing its metal blades); akin to Pawniard evolving into Bisharp, a pawn in chess can be promoted into a bishop piece (among other chess pieces classes) if it reaches the opponent's side of the board. It may also involve to bisect (to cut or split into two), referring to the lethality of Bisharp's cutting abilities.

Kirikizan may be a combination of 切り刻む kirikizamu (to mince) and 斬 zan (to cut or slay).
