Welcome to Goldenrod, the largest metropolis in Johto and sister city to Saffron in Kanto. This sprawling city boasts several major attractions, including a Pokémon Gym, Bike Shop, Game Corner, Radio Tower, and Department Store. There is so much to do in the big city that it's easy to forget about a single shady character. But with a Team Rocket grunt keeping tabs on the Radio Tower, expect to save the city sooner or later. But first thing's first, let's see the sights!
Goldenrod City is a sprawling metropolis located in western Johto, between Routes 34 and 35. It is the region's largest city, and a major hub of economy and telecommunications. The Goldenrod Department Store offers a wide variety of goods, and an underground shopping district has its own selection. The Radio Tower broadcasts several informative programs, while patrons aim to hit the jackpot at the local Game Corner. A bicycle shop has recently moved here from Kanto, while the high-speed Magnet Train links the two neighboring regions. The Goldenrod Gym can be found in the northeast part of the city, next to a flower shop.

Bike Shop
Goldenrod Department Store
The Bike Shop has moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from Cerulean City in Kanto, but demand has not been very strong. Since you're traveling so much, the owner asks to loan you a Bicycle in the hopes that the advertising will increase interest, and business will pick up. Riding your new bike is faster than traveling on foot, and he gains new customers—everybody's happy!
The Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto. Nearly any item a Trainer could want can be found here.

B1F
The basement is only accessible by elevator. A group of workers and a Machoke are renovating the area. Each time you visit, these boxes will be moved to different places, allowing access to new parts of the basement. On the first visit, each side room is blocked off. On the second visit, an Ultra Ball can be found in the southeast room. On the third visit, a Burn Heal and an Ether can be obtained from the western room.

Game Corner
2F: Trainer's Market
Unlike Celadon's Game Corner, this one has no secret entrance to an underground Rocket base. Unfortunately, the games are off-limits without a Coin Case, so Trainers who want to try their luck will have to find one first. After doing so, coins can be purchased at 50 for pdollar1000, or 500 for pdollar10,000. Leave the Game Corner for the southwest, and enter the building marked Underground Entrance.
The Trainer's Market is found on the second floor. Everyday items like Great Balls and Super Potions are offered here.

Goldenrod Underground
3F: Battle Collection
The Goldenrod Tunnel runs north-south under the west side of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. The underground hallway widens just beyond the first two Trainers, allowing more room for the three shops here.
The Battle Collection occupies the third floor. Temporary stat-enhancing items are sold here.

Bargain shop
5F: TM Corner
The northern bargain shop is only open on Monday mornings, 4am to 9am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Having some of these items on-hand will help replenish your money if you are defeated in battle.
The TM Corner can be found on the fifth floor. Several valuable Technical Machines are offered here.

Pokémon Salon
A Mysterious Gift
The Pokémon Salon, the center shop, is operated by two brothers. Their services will raise a Pokémon's friendship, though at different rates. The younger brotherSuWeFr charges PDollar300, while the older brotherTuThSa charges PDollar500. Their shop is closed on Mondays.
Carrie can be found near the stairs. Speaking to her unlocks the Mystery Gift function, which is used to communicate with other Mystery Gift-enabled games to obtain random Decoration or items.

Time for a Trade
A man dressed in blue near the counter would like to trade Pokémon. He is willing to part with his Machop in exchange for a Drowzee. Drowzee can be found just outside Goldenrod City, on Routes 34 and 35.

An Intriguing Impression
On Sundays, a second vendor appears behind the counter. Speak to her, and she will assess how your lead Pokémon feels about you. If it is friendly toward you, she hands out 27 as a reward. If not, she gives out 21 instead. She hands out only one TM each week.

Herb Shop
6F: Rooftop Square
The Herb Shop, the southern-most shop, sells medicinal herbs that heal or revive Pokémon and are cheaper than their traditional counterparts. The downside is that Pokémon do not enjoy their bitter taste, so their friendship rating will decrease slightly as a result. This shop is only open on weekends.
The Rooftop Square houses a picnic area and several vending machines. Each machine offers Fresh Water, Soda Pop, and Lemonade.

Bill's house
Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon PC Storage system, lives on the city's western coast with his mother and sister. He is currently away on business in Ecruteak City, but since you are using his system, his sister gives you his phone number. This is a useful way to check how many Pokémon are stored in the current box.

After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a Eevee from him.
Friendship checker
The house to the northeast of the department store belongs to a woman who can evaluate the friendliness of the first Pokémon in your party. There are Friendship that can only be acquired when a Pokémon is happy with its Trainer. There are Friendship that can be done in order to deepen a Pokémon's friendship with its Trainer, like grooming it or feeding it vitamins.

Bike Shop
The Bike Shop has recently moved to the city's southeast neighborhood from the Kanto region, but is having trouble attracting customers. Recognizing the great deal of traveling you will be doing as a Pokémon Trainer, the owner asks to loan you a Bicycle. His hope is that others will see you riding one of his bikes and be interested enough to visit his shop. He takes down your contact information, and soon you have a brand new Bicycle. Riding a bike is faster than traveling on foot, and the owner gains new customers—everybody wins!

Sometime later, you receive a call from the owner. He says that business is better now that people have seen you with one of his Bikes, and lets you keep the one he lent you to show his thanks.

Magnet Train Station
The Magnet Train station is located in the northwest part of the city. The high-speed train links Goldenrod City to Saffron City, in the middle of the neighboring Kanto region. With a Pass, it is normally possible for visitors to board the train at any time. However, it seems to be running late and has not yet returned from its latest journey into Kanto.

Goldenrod Radio Tower
The Goldenrod Radio Tower stands tall in the northwest part of the city. It is the source of all Pokégear broadcasts in Johto. Visitors are allowed on the first and second floors, while the upper floors are restricted to authorized personnel only.

1F
Lucky Number Lottery
One of the radio programs produced here, the Radio, announces a random, five-digit number every week. Speak to the man behind the counter to have him check this week's number against the ID Numbers of your Pokémon, and if any of these numbers are a full or partial match, you win a prize. Possible prizes include PP Up, Exp. Share, and Master Ball.

Promo Quiz
The woman behind the counter, farthest from the entrance, is running a promotional campaign. Speak to her to take a short quiz, with a free Pokégear as a prize.

Name Rater
{| style="margin: auto; background: #; roundy; border: 2px solid #;"
The Name Rater lives in the house to the west of the Goldenrod Gym. Like his counterpart in Lavender Town, the Name Rater evaluates a Pokémon's nickname, and allows Trainers to think up new nicknames for them.

Mood Tester
There are Friendship, like Espeon and Umbreon, that can only be acquired when a Pokémon is happy with its Trainer. The woman in the house near the Bike Shop will evaluate the friendship rating of the first Pokémon in your party. There are Friendship that a Trainer can do in order to raise a Pokémon's friendship, like grooming it or feeding it vitamins.

Radio Tower
With the Radio Card installed, Trainers can use their Pokégear to tune into several different programs.
The Radio Tower stands tall directly aside of the train station. The man behind the counter runs a lottery, and hands out prizes if any numbers on your ticket match your ID number. Speak with the woman behind the counter to participate in a quiz, with a Pokégear Pokégear as a prize. Once installed, Trainers can tune into the following programs.

Magnet Train Station
2F
Next to the Radio Tower is the Magnet Train Station. Currently shut down, this bullet train normally runs between Johto's Goldenrod and Kanto's Saffron twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. The other major method of travel between regions—sailing on the S.S. Aqua—runs much less frequently, making the Magnet Train the ideal method of transportation.
A man posted in front of the stairs to 3F reminds visitors that the upper floors are off-limits. He mentions how this was not always the case, and wonders aloud if something is wrong with the director.

Game Corner
The Goldenrod Game Corner is located in the southwest part of the city, behind the Pokémon Center. The venue features Goldenrod Game Corner and a card flip game. Anyone looking to try their luck must first obtain a Coin Case in order to play. Coins can then be purchased at the counter on the left in bundles of 50 for pdollar1,000 or 500 for pdollar10,000.

Goldenrod Department Store
Prize Corner
Located just east of the Pokémon Center, the Goldenrod Department Store is the largest shop in Johto. The behemoth building consists of eight floors, including the rooftop and basement, and has a wide array of items up for sale. With so many supplies at your disposal, you should have little trouble at the Goldenrod Gym.
Coins can be exchanged for prizes from the two women behind the counter on the right.

Bill's house
The house to the southwest of the Game Corner is home to a woman and her daughter. They are relatives of Bill, the inventor of the Pokémon Storage System. His mother reveals that he is currently away on business at the Pokémon Center in Ecruteak City. Since you are using his storage system, his sister gives you his phone number. Giving Bill a call is a convenient way to learn how many Pokémon are stored in the current PC box.
After meeting him in Ecruteak, he returns home to Goldenrod. Stop by his house afterwards to receive a Eevee from him.
The Underground
An underground passage connects the southwest and northwest parts of the city, with a small access hallway leading to the basement of the Department Store. It contains a bargain shop that sells valuable items, a Pokémon salon, and a shop selling herbal medicine. Each has set hours of operation and the three are never open at the same time.

Basement
Herbal shop
While there are no shops in the basement, you can take the elevator downstairs to find an Ultra Ball, a Burn Heal, and an Ether.
The southern booth houses a shop that offers herbal medicine. These items heal or revive Pokémon for a cheaper price than traditional medicine. However, Pokémon do not enjoy their bitter taste, so using them on a Pokémon will lessen its friendship rating. This shop is only open on weekends.

The Trainer's Market sells basic equipment and items that Trainers may find useful while on their journey.

3F
Pokémon Salon
The Battle Connection sells temporary stat-enhancing items.
The middle booth houses the Pokémon Salon, which is run by two brothers. Their services deepen a Pokémon's friendship with its Trainer, though at different rates. The younger and less experienced brother is available on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, and charges pdollar300. The older and more experienced brother is available on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, and charges pdollar500. Their shop is closed on Mondays.

4F
Bargain shop
A pharmacy known as the Medicine Box sells permanent stat-enhancing items.
The northern booth houses a bargain shop, which is only open on Mondays from 4:00 am to 9:00 am. This merchant deals in valuable items; while having no use themselves, they can be resold elsewhere for decent profit. Only one of each item may be purchased per week.

On Sundays, there is a second shopkeeper working here, and she will give out 27 if a Trainer's lead Pokémon is happy, and 21 if it is unhappy. Speaking with the little girl here unlocks the Mystery Gift option. There is also a man who wants a Drowzee, for which he is willing to trade his Machop, a Fighting Pokémon that will have an advantage at the local Gym.

6F
Name Rater
Like at the Celadon Department Store, the Rooftop Square has vending machines that dispense tasty, health-restoring drinks.
The house near the city's north exit belongs to the Name Rater. Here, Trainers can have the nicknames of their Pokémon rated and, if the Pokémon's ID number matches the Trainer's ID number, the nickname can be changed. If the Pokémon was caught by the Trainer that currently owns it, he says that the name could be better and offers the chance to change it. If the Pokémon was obtained via a trade, he says that the name is perfect and refuses to change it.

The Goldenrod Gym is devoted to Normal Pokémon. It's a good idea to trade for that Machop in the Department Store, as only Fighting Pokémon get a power bonus when battling Normal types. Ghosts like Gastly cannot be hit by Normal moves, but need a non-Ghost-type attack to damage Normal-type Pokémon. Whitney's Miltank can be very difficult to defeat; in addition to having high Defense and Speed, it can use Milk Drink to restore its high HP. As Miltank is female, its Attract move prevents male Pokémon from attacking 50% of the time. The best strategy is to use status ailments; either poison it and bide your time, or put it to sleep and chip away at it.
The Goldenrod Gym specializes in Normal Pokémon. Normal-type moves are not super-effective against any Pokémon, while Normal-type Pokémon are weak to Fighting moves.

The Gym is filled with planters of bushes and flowers arranged in the shape of a Clefairy. Moving clockwise along the exterior wall, it is possible to bypass Beauty Victoria in the northwest corner and reach the interior area. Moving counter-clockwise instead, challengers must defeat Beauty Samantha in the northeast to continue onward. Two more Trainers must then be defeated to reach the Gym Leader.

Whitney's Clefairy may not be much of a problem on its own, but there is always a chance that using Metronome calls a powerful attack if luck is on its side. The more pressing threat is her Miltank. It has high Defense and Speed, and can restore its health with Milk Drink. Its most dangerous move is Rollout, which doubles in power for each consecutive hit. The easiest way to oppose the Goldenrod Gym is to bring the Machop available for trade in the Department Store. Its Fighting moves will deal serious damage to Whitney's Pokémon, and Miltank's Rollout is not very effective against Fighting-type Pokémon.

After the battle, Whitney sobs uncontrollably. Unable to claim your new Badge, you turn to leave when Lass Bridget steps in. According to her, Whitney always cries when she loses, but will compose herself soon. Speak to Whitney again, and she finally awards you the Plain, which gives your Pokémon a slight Speed boost during battle and enables the use of Strength in the field. She also gives out 45 as a prize.
