Cianwood City
Cianwood City is a small, isolated settlement on the coast of a large island.  Local attractions include the Cianwood Gym and Cianwood City known for its unique medicine.  The rocks that wash up on the northern beach can be Rock Smash away to reveal hidden Pokémon and items.

Cianwood City is a lonely little coastal city only connected to Johto's mainland by 40 41.  Despite its small size, the city encompasses a few important locations, including the Cianwood City and the Cianwood Gym.  Trainers with a Rock Smash Pokémon in their party can remove the rocks north of the city; Krabby are common here, though there are items hidden under the rocks as well.

Pick up the Medicine
A Trainer's first stop in Cianwood City is the 500-year-old Cianwood City.  Upon hearing of the lighthouse Pokémon's illness, the pharmacist gives you the List of key items in Generation II, a powerful medicine that should heal Amphy of its sickness.  After dispensing the SecretPotion, the pharmacist offers traditional medicine for sale.
Cianwood Pharmacy
The Cianwood City has served as the local Poké Mart for the last 500 yearsInform the pharmacist of the situation at the lighthouse to receive the List of key items in Generation II, a powerful remedy that should restore Amphy's health.  After dispensing the SecretPotion, the pharmacist offers traditional medicine for sale.

Get a rare Pokémon
Get a rare Pokémon
Cianwood may be isolated, but it's not without its share of crime.  Stop by the house just north of the pharmacy to meet a PokéManiac who was bullied by Silver into giving up his prized Sneasel.  He's worried that the thief may return, and asks you to take his Shuckle for safekeeping.  Shuckle have an unusual ability; if given a Berry to hold, the mold in its shell will degrade it into a Drink.  If left even longer, the Berry Juice would eventually solidify into a Vitamin.

After obtaining the SecretPotion, visit the house just north of the pharmacy. The guy inside was bullied into giving his prized Sneasel to a kid with piercing eyes and long hair, and he's afraid that the thief may come back. He gives you his Shuckle for safekeeping (as long as you have an empty slot in your party). While not worth much on Attack, Shuckle more than makes up for it with its strong Defense. It has an unusual ability as well - if its Trainer gives it a Berry to hold, the mold inside its shell would degrade the item over time, eventually turning it into Drink. If left with Shuckle even longer, the Berry Juice would solidify into a Vitamin.

The Cianwood Gym only allows Fighting-types to train here, so Psychic- and Flying-type moves are best to useAvoid using types like Normal or Ice, since they are vulnerable to Fighting-type attacks.  While Ghost-types have full immunity here, a higher-level Kadabra or Pidgeotto will strike terror into the Gym's Fighting Pokémon.
The Cianwood Gym trains Fighting Pokémon, so Psychic- and Flying attacks will have the greatest impact.  Normal-, Ice-, Rock-, Dark-, and Steel Pokémon all take double the normal damage from Fighting attacks.  The only major threat is Chuck's Poliwrath; it can put opponents to sleep with Hypnosis, or inflict confusion with DynamicPunch.  In addition to Psychic and Flying attacks, its part-Water means it is also vulnerable to Grass- and Electric attacks.

After his defeat, Chuck awards the Storm to Trainers.  This badge commands obedience from Pokémon of level 70 or less, and also allows Trainers to fly from town to town, after obtaining HM02.  Chuck's parting gift to victorious Trainers is 01, a move that guarantees confusion upon impact, despite its 50% accuracy rating.

Upon his defeat, Chuck awards you the Storm, which guarantees obedience from Pokémon of level 70 or less.  It also enables the use of Fly outside of battle, even though you don't have HM02 yet.  Chuck's parting gift to you is 01, a move with only 50% accuracy that guarantees confusion if it hits.

Now that you've earned the Storm, talk to the woman out in front of the Gym.  The woman, who happens to be Chuck's wife, is so impressed that she gives you 02, and thanks you for giving him a reason to train.  Fly lets you travel to any town instantly, as long as you've been there before.  This makes it a lot easier to revisit earlier locations, like the Ruins of Alph or Union Cave, and collect items that you couldn't reach before.  Choose one of your birds to learn this new move, then return to Olivine with the SecretPotion in hand.

Jasmine, the shy and quiet Gym Leader of Olivine City, has not recruited any junior Trainers for her Gym.  Because of this, there is only a single battle that takes place here. Jasmine specializes in the Steel-type, which was only recently discovered (along with the Dark). Steel-types are great defensively, resisting attack from eleven different types. Fire- and Ground moves, like Flamethrower or Earthquake, work best here.

Mt. Mortar
Mt. Mortar is an enormous cave, and the high chances of encountering its native wildlife can make getting lost very costly.  Fully exploring the area requires the moves Surf, Strength, and Waterfall, and the inky darkness also makes Flash a necessity.  Mt. Mortar from Saffron City is training on the lowest floor, and you'll need an empty party slot if you hope to get Tyrogue of his prized Pokémon.

Trainers that venture inside Mt. Mortar should bring no more than five Pokémon with them, in order to get Tyrogue. It is also a wise choice to bring a Pokémon that can Flash the darkness.

The ladder to the northwest takes you to the first platform at the top of the waterfall, where you'll find an Ether.  Climb back down the ladder and go east.  Strength the boulder out of the way and head north.  When you reach the center of the Lower Cave, you can jump the ledge to the left to find a Potion, and jump the ledge to the right to find an Escape Rope.  The northwest area is inaccessible from here, so backtrack to the boulder and go east.  Climb the ladder on the platform to reach the second platform at the top of the waterfall, where you'll find a Battle item.  Climb down and take the nearest exit back to the Entrance cave.
! style="background: #; 15px;" align="center" <b>000000</b>

Head southeast for the exit, and check the surroundings for a Potion lying hidden nearby.

Center Entrance
Surf north, climb the waterfall, and go through the opening to reach the Upper Cave.

Swim across the pool to the northwest to find a Vitamin, then go back past the entrance to the southeast corner.  Cross the next pool to get a Potion, then continue north.  Turn to the west and jump down the westernmost ledge.  Head west to the next pool of water, swim north, and jump the ledge.  Jump the first ledge to the south to pick up 40 on the center platform, then circle back.  Go east and surf north across the next pool.  Grab the Escape Rope on the nearby platform and jump the ledge to the east.  Swim northeast and walk along the north wall.  Jump both ledges to find an Ether, then surf to the nearest platform for a Evolution-inducing held item.  Circle around and climb down the northwest ladder to the Lower Cave.

Go east along the platform, then turn west and go down the stairs.  Pick up the Revive to the southwest, then work your way to the northwest corner.  Turn south and climb down the ladder to the Basement.

Head east to meet the Karate King, who once led the old Fighting Gym in Kanto's Saffron City.  He's been training here since he lost his title as the city's Gym Leader to Sabrina.  He battles you with his Hitmonlee and Hitmonchan, and when defeated, gives you the child form of the two, Tyrogue.  Tyrogue can evolve into Hitmonlee Hitmonchan Hitmontop Pokémon when it reaches level 20.

Entering from one of the side entrances, Trainers must climb a stairway cut into the rock ledge to reach the next section of the cave. Here, Trainers can take the stairs to the northwest in order to reach an Ether. The stairs on the rocky platform (near the east entrance) lead to a Battle item  Backtrack and Strength the boulder out of the way, allowing you to venture deeper into the cave. A few items, including a Potion and Escape Rope are lying around. This is as far as Trainers can go, without entering from 42's central entrance.

Center Entrance
Head south, move the boulder, and step out into the water.  Sail down to the southwest corner, then cross the pool of water here to get a Status ailment healing item.  Surf all the way up to the northeast corner, then turn south.  Go west, then north to find another Potion.  Swim south, climb up onto the western platform, and take the ladder back up to the Entrance.  The exit lies to the south.

This entrance leads to a rocky platform with stairs leading to the basement.  Once in the basement, Trainers can only surf around the cave, picking up a Potion and a Status ailment healing item.  The lone Strength here is meant to be pushed from the other side, so Trainers have nowhere else to go but back to the entrance.

In order to reach the deepest area of the cave, a Trainer must have acquired 07.  Entering from the central cave, they will be able to surf around the rocky ledge and ascend the waterfall beyond.  The upper area of the cave is littered with small ponds, which Trainers must surf across in order to reach the stairs in the northwest. <br>
