In her debut, Anabel is a resident of the Battle Frontier, and is  described as a mysterious, intensely strong and enigmatic Trainer known as the Battle Tower's Salon Maiden. When defeated, she confers the player the Gold Ability Symbol in place of the previous silver version. All subsequent rematches afterwards are against this updated team, and she is far more encouraging in tone compared to her previous aloofness, in hopes of seeing the player challenge her again.

Anabel later returned in Pokémon Sun and Moon, with a drastically new appearance, appearing outside of a battle facility for the first time.

Ten years prior to the events of Sun and Moon, Anabel was found unconscious on a Poni Island beach by Looker and Nanu, who had just completed a mission for the International Police. She had lost most of her memories, was only able to tell them her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she protected a tower there, and that she was a powerful Trainer. After being placed in the care of the International Police, they detected incredible amounts of Ultra Wormhole energy coming from her, implying that she was a Faller who was lost in a wormhole for a significant time. Anabel was never informed of this, however. Anabel joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, until she became Looker's superior in the UB Task Force, a secret division of the International Police that deals with Ultra Beasts. She took to her new role within the International Police as head of the UB Task Force. Anabel maintains a professional demeanor, training for upcoming assignments even on her time off, and regularly catches herself thinking about work where she knows she should be taking time to relax. She is passionate about the work that she does for the UB Task Force in particular, hoping to safeguard the lives of people and Pokémon, especially those of the Ultra Beasts.
Anabel later returns in Pokémon Sun and Moon, with a drastically new appearance, additional Pokémon, and having a story role outside of a battle facility for the first time.

While Anabel has little recollection of her time in the Battle Frontier, many of her original traits remain. Though she no longer openly expresses harsh critique, she still measures one’s skill with a battle and praises their innate talent if they’re victorious. She seeks out strong trainers out of self-imposed challenge and a sense of nostalgia. Outside of her work, Anabel has the occasional light-hearted moment; lightly teasing her coworker Looker, over his eagerness for a feast, though at times, this is to mask her exhaustion as to keep others from worrying.

After the player becomes Champion, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the 8 motel on Akala Island. The pair recruit the player to the UB Task Force. Although one of the task force's duties is to either safeguard or destroy the Ultra Beasts, neither Anabel nor Looker wishes to harm them, so they need the help of the new Champion of Alola. Anabel will battle the player to ensure that they are up to the job. The group proceeds to track down and catch Ultra Beasts across all four of Alola's islands. After the player catches the first, Nihilego, Anabel arranges for the player to keep the Ultra Beasts, rather than delivering them to the International Police where they would end up as research subjects. During each mission, Anabel's job is to protect nearby populated areas with the assistance of her Pokémon. As the missions continue, however, Anabel starts to show signs of fatigue. Apparently, the Ultra Beasts are being drawn to her strongly as a Faller and becoming extremely aggressive toward her, which is only exacerbated when there are multiple of them that can assail her simultaneously. In the last mission, Looker finally misdirects her away from the action so that she can recover her strength.
Anabel joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, much to the help of Nanu before his retirement, until she became Looker's superior in the UB Task Force; a secret division of the International Police that deals with Ultra Beasts. Anabel maintains a professional demeanor, to the point of training for upcoming assignments on her time off, and regularly thinking about work where she knows she should be taking time to relax. Nevertheless, she is passionate about the work that she does for the UB Task Force and hopes to safeguard the lives of people and Pokémon, especially those of the Ultra Beasts.

After all of the Ultra Beasts have been caught, the International Police HQ grants Anabel and Looker paid leave until they receive their next orders. Anabel plans to go meet with Nanu again and then spend her time sightseeing around Alola.

Anabel also has the occasional light-hearted moment; lightly teasing her coworker Looker over his eagerness for a feast and acting cheerful, though at times this is meant to mask her exhaustion to keep others from worrying about her.

Anabel can later be encountered again as a Trainer in the Battle Tree, primarily using Pokémon from her Emerald roster. According to Pokémon Masters EX, her first partner Pokémon is her Snorlax, who has appeared in every one of her battle rosters since her debut.
After the player becomes the champion of Alola, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the Route 8 motel on Akala Island with the request of recruiting the player to the UB Task Force. It is here that the two reveal the effect of Lusamine’s prior actions in the story: Ultra Beasts have passed through Ultra Wormholes all over Alola, and Anabel personally chose to take on the mission with Looker as her backup. Although one of the task force's duties is to either safeguard or destroy the Ultra Beasts, neither Anabel nor Looker wishes to harm them, so they need the help of the new Champion of Alola to ensure their safe capture. Anabel will battle the player to make certain that they are up to the job, reciting a quote she had said long before during her time as a Frontier Brain. With the player’s victory and recruitment, the group proceeds to track down and catch Ultra Beasts across all four of Alola's islands, and after the player catches the first, Nihilego, Anabel arranges for the player to keep the Ultra Beasts instead of delivering them to the International Police, where there they would end up as research subjects.

Apparently, the Ultra Beasts are being drawn to her strongly as a Faller and becoming extremely aggressive toward her, which is only exacerbated when there are multiple of them that can assail her simultaneously. She constantly rejects Looker’s appeals for him to take her place, expressing that this is part of her duty and that she cannot allow Looker to face danger without a partner Pokémon alongside him. During the final mission however, Looker finally misdirects her away from the action so that she can recover her strength.

In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, Anabel appears with Looker in Poni Plains. The two block the way to Poni Coast until the UB incident at Poni Grove is resolved, at which point Anabel leaves to go to the Battle Tree for training. Whilst her age is unknown, a young boy in the Battle Frontier refers to her as "an older girl." Anabel is a tall, thin girl with long arms and legs. Her skin is of a light complexion, with lilac-colored eyes and hair, being short on top. In her artwork, she wears a white, segmented jacket with a large collar and golden highlights; the bottom half sporting three golden buttons, and stopping just around her waist.  The sleeves of this jacket are long and of a sheer, see-through material, with a slight lilac color. They taper out towards the bottom, with small white cuffs around Anabel's wrists. Below, she wears lilac-colored pants with a similarly gold-colored cuff towards the ankles, above white socks and black shoes; with the soles being colored gold.

Anabel's in-game assets largely match these colors, but differ depending on the system model that the game is being played on, to compensate for the lack of a backlight. She goes from a consistent lilac to a deeper, more vibrant purple, in spite of her Japanese name; リラ Lila. This is even more apparent with Anabel's overworld sprite, which appears a dark pink due to palette limitations. Compared to her official artwork, Anabel's shoes are lilac as opposed to black, due to palette restrictions. Unlike most other characters in the game, she lacks eyewhites.
