In her debut, Anabel is a resident of the Battle Frontier, and is  described as a mysterious, intensely strong and enigmatic {{pkmn|Trainer}}.<ref name=AnabelTowerQuote>''"It sounds like BATTLE TOWER is the hottest. Bet you didn't know this! One of those top TRAINERS that SCOTT calls the FRONTIER BRAINS is there. It's this mysterious TRAINER called the SALON MAIDEN that runs the place."''</ref> Both polite yet aloof, she is particularly focused on measuring the talent of her opponents with the team she uses in her initial battle.<ref name=AnabelMeasuringTeam>''"When she's measuring up her opponent, she apparently uses these POKéMON: A PSYCHIC-type PSI POKéMON, a FIRE-type VOLCANO POKéMON, and a NORMAL-type SLEEPING POKéMON."''</ref> She first appears in the {{gdis|Battle Tower|III}} as the 35th opponent the {{player}} faces, and would always be honest in her judgment; though oftentimes brutally, as upon her victory she’d express her disappointment or even tell others that they lack talent altogether.<ref name=AnabelTalentQuote>''"Man! Throughout subsequent rematches, Anabel changes up her team to one she considers more serious, vowing that she won't hold back as she did before.<ref name=AnabelRematchQuote>''"You really did come back to see me... ... ... ... ... ... ... You've won straight matches to see me... I won't have to hold back against you... It's been too long now... Too long since I've been able to battle without thinking about anything... I wish I could battle with you again..."''</ref> When defeated, she awards [[Symbol|Ability Symbol]] onto the {{DL|Trainer Card (game)|Frontier Pass}}. At the 70th consecutive match, she confers the Gold Symbol upon them.

Ten years prior to the events of {{pkmn|Sun and Moon}}, Anabel was found unconscious on a [[Poni Island]] beach by [[Looker]] and [[Nanu]], who had just completed a mission for the [[International Police]]. She had lost most of her memories, was only able to tell them her name, that she came from Hoenn, that she protected a tower there, and that she was a powerful Trainer. After being placed in the care of the International Police, they detected incredible amounts of [[Ultra Wormhole]] energy coming from her, implying that she was a [[Faller]] who was lost in a wormhole for a significant time. Anabel was never informed of this, however. Anabel joined the International Police herself and quickly ascended the ranks, until she became Looker's superior in the UB Task Force, a secret division of the International Police that deals with [[Ultra Beast]]s. She took to her new role within the International Police as head of the UB Task Force. Anabel maintains a professional demeanor, training for upcoming assignments even on her time off, and regularly catches herself thinking about work where she knows she should be taking time to relax. She is passionate about the work that she does for the UB Task Force in particular, hoping to safeguard the lives of people and Pokémon, especially those of the Ultra Beasts.

While Anabel has little recollection of her time in the Battle Frontier, many of her original traits remain. Though she no longer openly expresses harsh critique, she still measures one’s skill with a battle and praises their innate talent if they’re victorious. She seeks out strong trainers out of self-imposed challenge and a sense of nostalgia. Outside of her work, Anabel has the occasional light-hearted moment; lightly teasing her coworker Looker, over his eagerness for a feast, though at times, this is to mask her exhaustion as to keep others from worrying.

After the player becomes {{pkmn|Champion}}, they will meet Anabel and Looker when they visit the {{rt|8|Alola}} motel on [[Akala Island]]. The pair recruit the player to the UB Task Force. Although one of the task force's duties is to either safeguard or destroy the Ultra Beasts, neither Anabel nor Looker wishes to harm them, so they need the help of the new Champion of Alola. Anabel will battle the player to ensure that they are up to the job. The group proceeds to track down and catch Ultra Beasts across all four of Alola's islands. After the player catches the first, {{p|Nihilego}}, Anabel arranges for the player to keep the Ultra Beasts, rather than delivering them to the International Police where they would end up as research subjects. During each mission, Anabel's job is to protect nearby populated areas with the assistance of her Pokémon. As the missions continue, however, Anabel starts to show signs of fatigue. Apparently, the Ultra Beasts are being drawn to her strongly as a Faller and becoming extremely aggressive toward her, which is only exacerbated when there are multiple of them that can assail her simultaneously. In the last mission, Looker finally misdirects her away from the action so that she can recover her strength.

After all of the Ultra Beasts have been caught, the International Police HQ grants Anabel and Looker paid leave until they receive their next orders. Anabel plans to go meet with Nanu again and then spend her time sightseeing around Alola.

Anabel can later be encountered again as a Trainer in the [[Battle Tree]], primarily using Pokémon from her Emerald roster. According to [[Pokémon Masters EX]], her first partner Pokémon is her Snorlax, who has appeared in every one of her battle rosters since her debut.
