It evolves from Flaaffy starting at level 30. It is the final form of Mareep.

The wool it had is now entirely gone, and their body is now mostly yellow in coloration, and it now has a white belly. It has black stripes on its neck, ears and tail and the orb on its tail is now red and has gained another smaller orb on its forehead. Its stubby arms resemble flippers.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Ampharos gives off so much light that it can be seen even from space. People once used the light of this Pokémon as a beacon, or to send signals across the ocean.

Behavior

Ampharos is a gentle Pokémon that spends most of its time grazing in flocks of other Ampharos and its pre-evolutions Mareep and Flaaffy. Because its tail glows brightly, in times of emergency it uses its tail as a beacon in the place of a lighthouse.

Trivia

  • Ampharos shares the same species name with Lanturn. They are both known as Light Pokémon.
  • Despite all of its Pokédex entries mentioning that its tail glows as a beacon, it cannot learn the move Tail Glow. It can, however, learn Signal Beam, which could serve a similar purpose.
  • Along with its evolutionary relatives, Ampharos is the only Electric-type that can learn Power Gem.
  • Ampharos is still able to learn Cotton Spore and Cotton Guard by leveling up though it is based on a shorn sheep.
  • Despite the fact that its Japanese name means electric dragon, Ampharos cannot learn any Dragon-type moves, nor is it in the Dragon egg group. However, it is used by Clair in Pokémon Stadium 2.

Origin

Ampharos resembles a sheared sheep that its evolution line leads up to as they lose wool with each evolution. It also shares traits with a lighthouse, such as its height, stripes and the beacon on the top; the two also share a name. It, as well as its pre-evolutions, may have been based on the title of the science fiction novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?.

Name origin

Its name is a combination of ampere, or amp, a measure of electrical current, and pharos, the Greek word for "lighthouse". Ampharos's Japanese name can be taken to mean 電流 denryū, electric current, or 電竜 denryū, electric dragon, and may include 電球 denkyū, light bulb in its name, referring to its tail.

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Ampharos
French Pharamp A combination of phare and ampere.
Korean 전룡 Jeollyong
Chinese 電龍 Diàn Lóng From its Japanese name, Denryu. Literally means "Electric dragon".
