Alakazam (Japanese: フーディン Foodin) is a Psychic-type Pokémon.

It evolves from Kadabra when traded. It is the final form of Abra.

Biology

Physiology

Alakazam is characterized by its human-like structure and its large mustache (which is less prominent in females - see below). It has grown slightly since evolving from Kadabra and has become much lankier. Alakazam now has brown sections over its forearms and knees. It has lost the Zener markings and the tail it had as a Kadabra. Its head (and more importantly, its brain) has become much larger, giving it extremely powerful mental powers. It is bipedal with three toes on each foot, each of which has a white claw. It wields a silver spoon in each hand, each of which acts as an amplifier for its special abilities.

Gender differences

A female has a significantly shorter mustache.

Special abilities

It is said that Alakazam is known to have mastered every type and form of psychic ability, including, but not limited to: telekinesis, telepathy, ESP, psionic abilities, levitation, defensive techniques, mind control, and telekinetic blasts. Alakazam are said to have excellent memory and can remember everything that it has experienced since hatching as an Abra, and has an IQ that exceeds 5,000, making it the most intelligent non-legendary Pokémon. Upon possessing amazing psychic skills and knowledge, Alakazam is proficient with the use of the elemental punches, giving it the ability to cause serious damage to any foe that resist its psychic moves. Although Alakazam is quite fragile and prefers to use its psychic abilities for movement and battle, it is quite capable of learning a broad range of fighting moves. As a fully evolved Pokémon, Alakazam is capable of using the moves Hyper Beam and Giga Impact.

Alakazam, and its pre-evolution, Kadabra, are the only known Pokémon that learn Kinesis and the only known Pokémon to learn Ally Switch without the aid of a TM.

Behavior

Each Alakazam carries two spoons everywhere it goes. These spoons are said to increase this Pokémon's psychic ability greatly.

Habitat

Alakazam live in urban areas, close to humans. They are mostly found in abandoned buildings left to disrepair. Its home range is the same as Abra and Kadabra.

Trivia

  • Alakazam weighs less than its pre-evolution, Kadabra. Its Pokédex entries offer a possible explanation as to why this is: Alakazam's brain increases in size upon evolution so that it has to move its body using psychic energy, which would cause its muscles to weaken and atrophy because it never uses them. This could also be due to Kadabra having a large tail and Alakazam not.
  • Although it doesn't have a tail, Alakazam is able to learn the move Iron Tail, possibly due to its pre-evolutions having tails.
  • Alakazam could be seen as a counterpart to Machamp. They are both the last stage of a three-part evolutionary family, they reach their final stage by trading, and they both have a 75% male gender ratio. Also, Alakazam excels at the Special Attack stat, while Machamp excels at Attack. They are both in all regional Pokédexes (excluding the Unova dex). Their evolutionary families are also next to each other in the National Pokédex. Moreover, a girl in Oreburgh City will trade her Abra for a Machop.
  • Despite being said to have weak muscles (as well as a low Attack stat), Alakazam has been seen using physical attacks, such as punching, many times in the anime, usually to great effect.
    • In fact, before Generation IV, it was common practice to teach Alakazam elemental punching moves to take advantage of its Special Attack stat. However, it has been less common practice for players of generation IV games and onwards with the physical and special moves no longer being based upon type.
  • Alakazam has the lowest average Performance of any fully-evolved Pokémon, and third lowest overall, only beaten by Gulpin (second) and Feebas (first).
  • In Red and Blue Versions, an Alakazam sent out by an opponent while the player's Pokémon has low health will have the cry of a Gastly.
  • In HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Alakazam is the same height as Ethan.

Origin

Alakazam is based on a magician and also a spoon bender. It also shares similarities to goats and foxes, both animals with ties to magic.

Name origin

Alakazam is an incantation used in stage magic, similar to Abracadabra.

Foodin can be spelled Houdin and is probably a reference to Jean Eugène Robert-Houdin or Harry Houdini, who were both famous magicians, as the Japanese names of the Abra line are based on famous mystics.
