In Japan, this card was released as a promotional card by All Nippon Airlines throughout August and September in 1999, with artwork by Toshinao Aoki. Passengers flying in conjunction with the "Pokémon Getaways" campaign could redeem their boarding passes for a two-card set that included Zapdos and Moltres. The English version was one of the Wizards Black Star Promos given away in the first few weeks of the theatrical release of The Power of One, with then English-exclusive artwork by Naoyo Kimura. This print was reprinted in Japan in Pokémon Web. The original Japanese artwork was eventually featured on English cards when reprinted in Supreme Victors as a retro card, having been reprinted in Japan in the Beat of the Frontier expansion.
The initial print of the Wizards promo erroneously credited Toshinao Aoki as the illustrator, who illustrated the Japanese promo. Wizards rectified the error, with subsequent prints correctly crediting Naoyo Kimura as the illustrator. However, the change was brought about close to or after the release of the film, so it is likely to assume fewer people received the correct version later into the campaign compared to those who received the misprint earlier.
