'''Jesse''' (Japanese: '''ムサシ''' ''Musashi'') is a member of the [[Team Rocket]] trio with [[James]] and {{MTR}}, that follows {{Ash}} and {{ashfr|friends}} around in the [[Pokémon anime]], usually trying to steal [[Ash's Pikachu]], but always failing.

Jesse's mother, [[Miyamoto]], was a high-ranking Team Rocket agent. When Jesse was around the age of three, Miyamoto left on a mission to the {{wp|Andes}} to record the voice of the elusive Pokémon {{p|Mew}}. However, after Miyamoto disappeared, Jesse was put into a foster home which had very little money. There were times when she had no choice but to eat snow because of a lack of more nourishing food.  

When she was old enough, she left home to become a Pokémon nurse in [[Johto]]. However, the school she was enrolled in was literally for ''Pokémon'' nurses (i.e. {{p|Chansey}}), so she failed to graduate and left, leaving behind a [[Nurse Joy's Blissey|Chansey]] she had befriended there. In the episode ''[[EP129|Ignorance is Blissey]]'', Jesse was reunited with that same Chansey, which had since evolved into a {{p|Blissey}}. It is assumed that she then traveled back to [[Kanto]], where she enrolled in [[Pokémon Tech]], a {{pkmn|Trainer}}'s school, she met [[James]], and subsequently failed and dropped out. After this, Jesse and James joined a bicycle gang in [[Sunny Town]], where Jesse was known for swinging a chain above her head as she rode her bike, acquiring the nickname "Chainer Jess". It was revealed in ''[[EP188|Spring Fever]]'' that she was a model at one point.

Due to conflicts in canon between Kanto and Johto episodes and the special episode ''[[SS012|Training Daze]]'', what happened between Jesse and James after the bike gang is unknown. What ''is'' known, as shown in the special episode, is that they joined Team Rocket separately and were on initially unfriendly terms after being grouped with {{MTR}} but they quickly made up and became good friends.

Sometime before joining Team Rocket, and it is not known when, Jesse obtained a [[Contest Pass]] in the [[Hoenn]] region. Also during the years before Team Rocket, she had several boyfriends, all of whom left her and/or treated her badly. In ''[[EP234|Xatu the Future]]'', she revealed that she had once worked at a T.V. station as the weathergirl. In ''[[AG156|From Cradle to Save]]'', it was revealed that she once was a ninja. In ''[[DP073|Crossing Paths]]'', it was revealed that she had a crush on a boy she had gone to school with named [[Astin]], who has a current-day counterpart [[Austin|with a similar name]].  

She has a long-standing bitter rivalry with [[Cassidy]], another member of Team Rocket. Team Rocket member {{an|Wendy}} held a grudge against Jesse for failing to pay for a drink (making Wendy pay), but got her revenge when she added the charge to Jesse's overall Team Rocket bill.

Jesse seems to have a special preference for snake-like Pokémon, owning both an {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}} and a {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}}. In ''[[EP032|The Ninja Poké Showdown]]'', she expressed a preference for {{type2|Poison}} Pokémon in general.

It is revealed in ''[[EP048|Holy Matrimony!]]'' that Jesse is almost identical in appearance to James's fiancée, [[Jessebelle]], with the two of them having virtually identical faces and the only noticeable physical differences between them being eye color, hairstyle, and slightly different hair colors. Meowth in particular takes notice of this and frequently reminds Jesse of the fact throughout the episode, something she takes strong offense to due to Jessebelle's reprehensible personality. By the time the subject of Jessebelle is breached again in ''[[DP002|Two Degrees of Separation!]]'', she seems to have forgotten about her doppelganger and needs Meowth to remind her of who she is.  The resemblance between the two was further explored in ''[[DP153|The Treasure is All Mine!]]'' when she disguised herself as Jessebelle in order to grant herself, James, and Meowth, entrance into one of James's family mansions without James having to do so himself.

Jesse is also known to be very vain and is also prone to explosive anger. She values her appearance, and she can get furious when her face or hair is damaged, such as in ''[[EP023|The Tower of Terror]]'', ''[[EP117|Don't Touch That 'dile!]]'', ''[[AG008|A Tail with a Twist]]'' or ''[[DP156|A Meteoric Rise to Excellence!]]''. When this happens, she may do things like beat up a Pokémon such as {{MTR}} or her {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}}. Furthermore, Jesse goes into a violent outrage whenever someone insults her beauty by calling her old, such as the episode ''[[EP040|The Battling Eevee Brothers]]'' when {{an|Misty}} calls Jesse an "old hag" (Japanese: ''oba-san''). She spat fire in extreme anger after Misty called her that name in that episode. She is also angered (compared to her companions, who are usually depressed when they fail at something) when missions are either failed or botched, which is a regular thing. This anger was intensely demonstrated in the Indigo League, Orange Islands and part of the Johto League story arcs. However, her anger tantrums started to become less intense over the next two story arcs.

Starting in [[Hoenn]], Jesse became a [[Pokémon Coordinator]], entering every contest that she could. She frequently made it to the battle round, but usually lost there. However, in ''[[DP022|Borrowing on Bad Faith]]'', she finally succeeded in winning an (unofficial) contest by using [[Dawn's Ambipom|Ash's Aipom]], which she had saved earlier in the episode. And, in ''[[DP061|Team Shocker!]]'', she won an official contest with her Dustox at [[Solaceon Town]]. Later in ''[[DP102|Shield with a Twist]]'', she won a ribbon with help of her Yanmega. She has [[Contest Pass]]es to compete in the Hoenn, Kanto, and Sinnoh regions.

In the Kanto contests, Jesse [[List of Team Rocket's disguises|disguised]] herself as ''Jessebella'' (Japanese: '''ムサぴょん''' ''Musa-pyon'') wearing a red dress and glasses. Eventually, Ash, Brock, Max and May found out her true identity in the last contest.

During the [[Kanto Grand Festival]], Jesse dressed up as ''Jessadia''  (Japanese: '''プリティ・ムサリン''' ''Pretty Musalin'') and wore glasses, long white socks, a yellow and orange dress, and had her hair in pigtails. She worked there as an announcer and [[Lilian Meridian]]'s assistant; Lilian herself said she did not really like Jessadia's style, but recognized her talent.  

In Sinnoh {{pkmn|Super Contest}}s, Jesse disguised herself as ''Jessilina'' (Japanese: '''キャンディ・ムサリーナ''' ''Candy Musalina''), using big glasses and an orange dress. She was notable for the fact that, in the appeals round of a contest, Jesse tended to use her Pokémon to show herself off, rather than showing them off. The orange dress she wore was ripped into pieces during her appeal for the Grand Festival in ''[[DP174|Last Call, First Round!]]''.

Although Jesse entered mostly every contest in Hoenn and Kanto, she lost in all of them, whether it was the first match of the Battle Rounds or the finals. However, in the Sinnoh region, she won three ribbons herself using her {{TP|Jessie|Dustox}}, {{TP|Jessie|Yanmega}} and {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}}, and obtained a ribbon after James won a contest in her place, as well as receiving one from [[Princess Salvia]] after she lost to her. Jesse is now eligible to participate in the [[Sinnoh Grand Festival]], and has made it to the semi-finals, losing to Dawn.

In the {{series|Best Wishes}}, Jesse, James, and Meowth were sent to the [[Unova]] region under orders from Giovanni after they were promoted in ''[[DP191|Memories are Made of Bliss!]]''. Now wearing black uniforms instead of their previous white ones, Jesse and James, along with Meowth, followed various missions given to them by Giovanni through other people. To prevent them from getting too much attention, Giovanni did not allow their other Pokémon to be sent to them, only making them use Pokémon native to Unova. Unknown to the two, Giovanni was not certain they would be successful; however, he sees that their presence in the region will force [[Team Plasma]] to reveal themselves. In ''[[BW023|Battling for the Love of Bug-Types!]]'', Jesse and James go back to their white uniforms.

As with the standards set by the Team Rocket organization, Jesse initially started off with mainly {{type2|Poison}} Pokémon, but as the anime continued onward, her team has diversified. However, she is still strongly associated with Poison-type serpentine Pokémon, such as Arbok and Seviper. Most of her other Pokémon tend to be unusual in appearance and don't usually fit the general image of "cute". However, she does display a desire to obtain Pokémon that are considered "adorable" when the opportunity presents itself, especially feminine Pokémon such as {{p|Happiny}} or {{p|Smoochum}}. She was also attracted to a {{p|Weavile}} in ''[[AG185|Duels of the Jungle!]]''.

Jesse placed in the following [[Grand Festival]] competitions:

Both Jesse and James appear in Pokémon Yellow as in-game bosses. They first attack the main character in [[Mt. Moon]], while trying to take one of the rare [[fossil]]s uncovered there.

Later, in [[Celadon City]]'s [[Rocket Game Corner]], Jesse and James guard Giovanni's room in the Team Rocket base. During that time, as the player runs into them, they are eager for revenge after the main character busted up their plans at Mt. Moon.

Finally, at [[Silph Co.]] in [[Saffron City]], Jesse and James make their final appearance, once again trying to stall the main character from reaching [[Giovanni|their Boss]].

Unlike in the anime, Jesse and James do not follow the main character around and come up with their usual evil plans to capture Pikachu.

Along with many other anime characters, both Jesse and James appeared in [[Pokémon Puzzle League]], where they appeared with a Weezing, an Arbok, and a Golbat. They are the main opponents in the "Spa Service" line clear challenge.

Jesse appears in the [[Electric Tale of Pikachu]] {{pkmn|manga}} series along with her teammates [[James]] and {{MTR}}.

Her first appearance is in ''[[ET07|Pikachu's Excellent Adventure]]''. She, James and Meowth tag along with a group of lost Pokémon, including {{AP|Pikachu}}, to try and find the [[Hidden Village]]. When they arrive, she and James attempt to steal the Pokémon living in the village, but they are quickly expelled by a {{p|Kangaskhan}}. In this chapter, she uses a {{TP|Jesse|Ekans}} in battle.

Jesse's next appearance is in ''[[ET08|You Gotta Have Friends]]''. She and James attempt to steal a herd of wild {{p|Pikachu}}. At this point in the manga, Jesse's {{p|Ekans}} has evolved into {{TP|Jessie|Arbok}}, though its evolution is not depicted in the manga.

While in the anime, the nature of Jesse's relationship with James is not explicitly stated, in the epilogue of the manga, James is shown [[RocketShipping|confessing his love to Jesse]]. They are shown afterwards married with Jessie visibly pregnant.

Like many female characters in the manga, Jesse is depicted with an oversized bust, though this is edited down for [[VIZ Media]]'s English translation.{{-}}

Jesse and James appear on both versions of the card {{TCG ID|Team Rocket|Here Comes Team Rocket!|15}}, which originally released in the {{TCG|Team Rocket}} set; it was re-released with different artwork in {{TCG|EX Team Rocket Returns}}.  In that expansion, there was also a preconstructed {{TCG|Theme Deck}} based on {{TCG|Jessie}}.<br/>

* According to James in ''[[EP016|Pokémon Shipwreck]]'', Jesse is short for Jessica.

* Jesse's hair color changed from red to magenta in ''[[EP261|Here's Lookin at You, Elekid]]'' and all subsequent episodes. This episode was the first to feature digital colored animation. In all the hand-colored cel animated episodes before the latter, Jesse's hair color was red. Certain movies though, such as ''[[M07|Destiny Deoxys]]'' and ''[[M08|Lucario and the Mystery of Mew]]'', depict her hair to be red, possibly because of a different style in coloring.  

* Out of all the Pokémon Jesse captured, she never actually weakened any of them with her Pokémon in battle; {{TP|Jessie|Lickitung}} one-hit-KO'd Arbok and never took any damage; {{TP|Jessie|Shellder}} was battled by [[James]] and his {{TP|James|Weezing}}; {{tp|Jessie|Wurmple}} was captured on the spot without any battling involved; {{TP|Jessie|Seviper}} was beaten up by Jesse ''herself''; {{TP|Jessie|Yanma}} was weakened by [[Tyler]] and his {{p|Piplup}}; {{TP|Jessie|Woobat}} was captured off-screen.

* In ''[[EP218|Plant It Now... Diglett Later]]'', Jesse claims to be 12 years old when an elderly woman claims to be 120, and Jesse reacts by saying "No! That's ten times my age!" However, Meowth replies "Now where did you learn that math?" implying she is older. In the dub of ''[[EP056|The Ultimate Test]]'' Jessie is said to be 17 years old.

Jesse's English name is taken from {{wp|Jesse James}}, an American outlaw. Her Japanese name, Musashi, is taken from 宮本武蔵 ''{{wp|Miyamoto Musashi}}'', a famous Japanese swordsman. In his most famous duel, he defeated his rival, 佐々木小次郎 ''{{wp|Sasaki Kojirō}}'', after whom James got his Japanese name. However, one can argue that she is also named after the Japanese battleship {{wp|Musashi}}, as her rival [[Cassidy]]'s Japanese name is based on the Japanese battleship {{wp|Yamato}}.
